National Sportsmanship Award 2007/2008

This is the letter sent on her behalf nominating Meagan for this award.

It is with great pleasure that we present the Alberta nomination for 2008 CRSF National Sportsmanship Award:
Meagan Carroll is 18 years old and has been skipping with the Camrose Spirals since 1999.  She is a very focused athlete and has demonstrated remarkable leadership during her entire skipping career.  She began coaching the club’s recreational team in her 2nd year and has consistently coached them every year since.   She has completed her NCCP level A, standard first aid and CPR.
A favored part of the sport for Meagan has been Heart & Stroke demos.  One year, she attended all 11 days worth of H & S demos, giving her huge energy to each of them and raising her average at school over 20%! (she wouldn’t get to go if her school work suffered so she worked extra extra hard in that area of her life).  Within her own school she has helped organize Jump Rope for Heart events, demonstrations, has been the recipient of many school awards including humanitarian and sportsmanship.
Meagan volunteers to coach for every workshop the club runs and it can easily be noted that she has probably attended every single one of them over the last 9 years.    Ever conscious of her role model status, Meagan commands respect for herself and for the team coaches.  She helps with fundraisers, has learned to French braid so she could help with that demanding part of the competition day.   She is mindful of her teammates performances and is at the sidelines when they perform.  Young athletes gravitate to her, her workshop students hug her as they leave.   In addition to being an athletic member of one team, Meagan coaches a 15/17 team and also helps the younger members of the club nail skills and improve their routines.  She has demonstrated extensively across the province and ventured to Ontario and US camps, bringing knowledge and enthusiasm back to the club.
Meagan intends to spend more time coaching in her future.  She graduates from high school the weekend after nationals and will take a year off schooling before heading to higher education.  Her career choice has not been made but what she does know – she will be a skipping coach where ever her future takes her.
Sincerely,
Alberta Skipping Association Board of Directors
